Story & Lore

The Shattering

For a thousand years, the moon Kagura watched over the Lunaris Archipelago. Its light powered the islands' lumen-craft, the soft magic used for everything from lamps to healing. The Celestine Order, a priesthood of moon-watchers, ruled from the island of Frostspire.

Three hundred years ago, on the night now called the Shattering, Kagura cracked. A burst of silver fire tore it into a ring of fragments that still hangs in the sky. Countless Moonshards fell to the islands below.

Rifts and the Bloom

Wherever a Moonshard struck, space folded around it into a Rift, a pocket world built from memories, crystal and light. Rifts bloom: they spread glowing crystal flora into the land around them and give birth to Hollows, monsters made of shardglass and shadow.

Inside each Rift lie Echoes, the memories of heroes who died fighting during the Shattering. Their spirits were caught in the moonlight and scattered across the shards.

Lanternbearers

Ordinary people who enter a Rift slowly lose their memories and become Hollows themselves. Only those who carry a Soul Lantern, a vessel forged from a Moonshard's core, can resist this. They are called Lanternbearers, and the Lanternbearer Guild in Hearthport trains and licenses them.

The protagonist's story (Acts)

Act Title Summary
Prologue Falling Light A new Moonshard crashes near the fishing village of Tomari. The player is caught in the Rift, survives by touching a Soul Lantern, and binds their first Echo: Aoi, the Wandering Blade.
I Lanternlight The player joins the Guild in Hearthport and clears Rifts in Verdant Shoals and Kiriyama Highlands. They learn that the Rifts are opening faster than ever before.
II The Drowned Library In the Sunken Archive the player finds records saying the Shattering was not an accident. The Celestine Order broke the moon on purpose.
III Ash and Glass Across the Ashfall Expanse and Glasswood, the player chases Seraph Noct, a rogue Lanternbearer who is collecting Moonshards to rebuild Kagura by force.
IV The Frozen Choir At Frostspire, the player confronts the surviving Celestine Order and learns the truth: Kagura was a prison. Something sleeps inside it.
V Moonscar The player descends into the Moonscar, the crater of the largest shard, to stop Noct. Then they must choose: restore the moon (and reseal the sleeper) or let the world keep blooming.

Endings

Act V has two main endings (Restore and Bloom) and a hidden third ending (Dawn). Dawn needs every Echo bound to Bond Level 5 and a choice made in the Secret Area The Hollow Garden.
